Three positive things, day eighteen

So, Saturday happened.

The first positive thing was watching the movie It Follows. It was surprisingly creepy and very well done for such a low budget movie. Definitely recommended, if you're into scary movies.

The second positive thing was discovering there's a huge Lego installation at a "children's" museum in Manchester - the rest of the gang went exploring and found it, so we'll have to go back again soon so I can see it too.

The third positive thing was having a good time at a local park, and bumping into a local family we've started to get to know a bit.

So, that was Friday.

The first positive thing was that I finished my work for the week in enough time to help with dinner, and I completed enough hours on an important project so that troop leader won't be worried about my quota ;-)

The second positive thing was a small thing, but I released a new version of a plugin for Drupal that's in use by at least a quarter of a million websites and has been downloaded over a million times. No pressure ;-) The new version fixes some bugs and will make it easier to avoid other bugs in future.

The last positive thing was uncovering a bunch of knots in Jen's back. While this isn't necessarily a good thing, we discovered them before she took the kids on a long drive to a new museum tomorrow, so hopefully we'll be able to loosen them up enough before she heads off to avoid problems while they're exploring.

Today was a bit humdrum and certainly didn't live up to yesterday's excitement.

One positive thing was pulling my hair out wondering why something wasn't working correctly on a project that I was working, only to talk to a coworker and realized that no, the changes I thought were missing just hadn't been added in yet. In lay person's terms, think of it like I had looked at a bunch of decorated cakes but forgot that the cake *I* was doing hadn't been decorated yet. Duh. So yay, I wasn't going crazy ;-)

Another positive thing was discovering that there's a play called "Outside Mullingar". FYI Mullingar was a nearby town when I was growing up and we visited it weekly, if not more often.

The third positive thing was discovering that the play is being performed in a town nearby this weekend. It has actually been running for the past week but we've only just found out about it.

Three positive things, day fifteen

So today was a relatively normal Wednesday with a few interesting highlights.

The first positive thing was rather unique. My awesomewife took our kids to a local (lake-based) beach to play for a few hours right after breakfast; she had thought of going to just a park but figured the beach would be something a little more special for their day. There was only one other group there - an older lady with two young children, a girl who was about five and a boy about six. At one point, while my wife was playing with our kids on the beach, she noticed that the (presumed) grandmother was in the water with the two kids. The lady was playing with the kids a little bit and then turned to go back to the beach, leaving the two in the water. As she was walking away the little girl began drifting further out into the water and started flailing her arms, indicating she was loosing control of her standing in the water. My wife noticed the lady continue to walk away and not notice, so she got up from the ground and started running to help, shouting as loud as she could to get the lady's attention. Within a few paces the lady realized something was wrong and turned back to grab the girl, who had already submerged a few times. By the time my wife got over to them the girl had been fished out of the water and the grandmother was getting her to cough up the water she'd inhaled - she was shaken, but ok. The grandmother was extremely grateful for my wife's help - if she hadn't started yelling it could have ended a lot worse - and it was a clear reminder that learning to swim is vitally important at a young age.

The second thing was going to our local Drupal user group's monthly meeting and having a fun evening with the few people who attended. As part of it we discussed my idea for a beginner's class for anyone in the area who'd like to learn web development, and we're going to put some work into the starting it in September. Woot!

The last positive thing was my awesomewife uncovering some letters that I'd written sixteen years ago during our first year in the states. I'd lost these so it was great to have a reminder of our early life together.

(this should have been posted last night)

Another short one today.

The first positive thing was hearing from an old friend. We didn't get to chat for long, because I had to have dinner and leave for a class, but we'll chat more again soon.

The second positive thing was attending my first ukulele class with the extremely talented, and patient, Stuart Fuchs. He had a six week freebie class at the local library during June and the start of July, this was the first full class and it went rather well. Stuart is a great teacher and I look forward to future classes.

The final positive thing was updating a client's website to the latest PHP. It was a bit of a juggle to get it all working, and it felt at one point like I had thrown the oranges into the air but nothing was coming down again, but it all worked in the end. And the odd part was that it didn't work when I tried it the previous night. I dunno, but it's working now.
